CAOLAS Trustees’ Annual Report 2020 to 2021
The year 2020 to 2021 was an unusual one for CAOLAS, with the COVID-19 pandemic limiting opportunities for public events and activities. Despite this, work continued behind the scenes and within the community, with several important projects taking shape.
CAOLAS completed its 18-month Citizen Science Project with a poetry competition for local school pupils, celebrating their connections with the marine environment of Loch Sunart and the Sound of Mull. Plans were also developed for a new native oyster restoration project in Lochaline, with funding secured to begin the work once restrictions allowed.
Elsewhere, CAOLAS secured support for new interpretation boards at Loch Sunart and worked with the Carna Conservation Initiative to commission an environmental report for the Isle of Carna and its surrounding waters.
The year also saw an important milestone for community-led marine conservation. Working alongside other members of the Coastal Communities Network, CAOLAS helped secure designation of the Argyll Coast and Islands Hope Spot, the first Mission Blue Hope Spot in Scotland and the UK.
Throughout the year, CAOLAS continued to contribute to national campaigns and consultations through the Coastal Communities Network, helping strengthen the voice of coastal communities in marine conservation and management.
