CAOLAS Trustees’ Annual Report 2021 to 2022

The year 2021 to 2022 marked an important period of growth for CAOLAS as activities began to recover from the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With support from the William Grant Foundation, CAOLAS recruited its first employee, Marine Community Officer Dr Texa Sim, providing new capacity to develop projects, outreach and community engagement.

A major focus was the launch of the Lochaline Native Oyster Project, delivered in collaboration with Seawilding. A native oyster nursery was established at Lochaline pontoons, alongside monitoring and biodiversity training, community maintenance days and engagement with Lochaline Primary School. The project aimed to restore native oysters and support biodiversity within the local Marine Protected Area.

CAOLAS also developed interpretation boards for Loch Sunart, commissioned an environmental report and conservation plan for the Isle of Carna, and ran a programme of free online winter talks.

Throughout the year, CAOLAS remained active within the Coastal Communities Network and continued its involvement with the Argyll Coast and Islands Hope Spot, helping connect local conservation activity with the wider community voice in Scottish marine management.
