CAOLAS Trustees’ Annual Report 2024 to 2025
The year 2024 to 2025 saw CAOLAS strengthen both its organisational capacity and its practical work in marine restoration, research and community engagement. A strategy weekend on Carna brought staff and trustees together to review CAOLAS’s development, undertake a Theory of Change exercise and identify future goals, while funding enabled continued investment in administration, coordination, communications and governance.
The Lochaline Native Oyster Restoration Project remained a cornerstone of CAOLAS’s work. Two new oyster cohorts were introduced to Lochaline, monitoring was expanded across three release sites, and new work included chlorophyll and salinity logging, hydrodynamic modelling, habitat mapping and trials of willow spat cages. The project also continued extensive outreach through schools, community events, university visits and knowledge-exchange activities.
The Morvern Baseline Project was completed during 2024, surveying five coastal sites across Morvern. Findings included seagrass meadows at Rhemore, high biodiversity across surveyed sites and potential restoration areas for oysters and seagrass, with results shared with stakeholders and contributing to wider discussions around marine restoration policy.
Community engagement also expanded through local events, the 2025 Winter Talk Series, school activities and the Our Seas Coastal Testimonies exhibition, which CAOLAS hosted in Lochaline before supporting its presentation at the Scottish Parliament. CAOLAS continued participating in the Coastal Communities Network, Our Seas and Argyll Hope Spot, while strengthening relationships with research and restoration partners and supporting community responses to local marine pollution incidents.
