Flapper Skate Egg Case Survey
Help search for flapper skate egg-laying habitat in our local waters.
CAOLAS members have the opportunity to join a series of flapper skate egg case surveys taking place in the Firth of Lorn and Sound of Jura during October.
The surveys, being undertaken by NatureScot and Edinburgh Napier University, will use drop-camera surveys to search for flapper skate egg cases and investigate potential egg-laying habitat.
Survey work will take place aboard the Etive Explorer, with opportunities for a small number of observers/helpers to join the team each day.
Survey dates
7–10 October 2026
Departing from Craobh Haven
13–16 October 2026
Departing from Dunstaffnage
18–22 October 2026
Departing from Dunstaffnage
There are spaces for up to three observers per day.
As this is boat-based fieldwork, survey plans are weather dependent and participation must be arranged and confirmed in advance. Exact timings and arrangements will be provided to participants by the survey organisers.
This is a fantastic opportunity to experience marine research in action and learn more about one of Scotland’s most remarkable and threatened marine species.
Places are limited and participation is subject to confirmation by the survey organisers. If you are interested in getting involved, please email admin@caolas.org
